—Luke 15:11-24
by: Lisa Moore.
In this parable, we typically focus on the prodigal son’s rebellion; his awakening to the state he was in; and his return to his father’s outstretched arms—a symbol of God welcoming the rebellious. This passage also continues yesterday’s theme of rejoicing when the lost return home. But if we read further, there is more we can discover! The older son was also rebellious, but more subtly so. He was self-righteous and unforgiving. Jesus told the Pharisees and scribes this parable because they were just like the older brother! They were self-righteous and rebellious against Jesus’ ministry to the lost. May the searchlight of God’s Word uncover all rebellion that is in us.
