—Hebrews 5:5-10
by: Leanne Lippincott.
Jesus himself didn’t decide to become our high priest; his Father designated him for that role. He was to be like Melchizedek, the high priest and king of Salem. Melchizedek’s name meant “king of righteousness.” But because Salem translates “peace,” it also meant “king of peace,” which aptly describes Jesus.
We’re told that Jesus shed tears and cried out to his Father (v. 7). For me, this passage deftly showed Jesus’ human side, making me want to cry with him. In spite of his suffering, our Savior remained obedient to the end—which, in reality, turned out to be the beginning.
