—Colossians 4:2-6
by: Leanne Lippincott.
Writing from a Roman prison, Paul urged the brethren in Colossae to witness for Christ in conversations filled with grace and seasoned with salt, making their message more palatable and easier to accept.
In biblical days, salt was a precious commodity. It was used as a preservative, a seasoning for animal sacrifices, to ratify covenants, and even to purify the pool of Jericho (2 Kings 2:20-21). Roman soldiers were partially paid in salt. In fact, the word “soldier” comes from “sal dare,” which means, “to give salt.” Even our word “salary” comes from “sal,” the Latin word for salt. In an ultimate tribute, Jesus called his disciples “the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13).
