It is easy to skim past a word like “enemy” without stopping to consider what it means. Dictionaries define an enemy as one who feels hatred towards another; tries to injure them; opposes their interests; and tries to overthrow them. That is what we were (and sometimes still are)—God’s enemies: Hating God; opposing His interest; actively trying to harm Him; plotting to overthrow Him. We, the creatures, presuming to attack the Creator; destroying His creation, including ourselves; seeking to rule rather than follow; hating Him. This is what we were when Christ died for us.
