—1 Samuel 2:6-10
by: Victoria Shephard.
In a world where children were a major status symbol for women, Hannah must have felt vindicated. Her social position had so increased because of Samuel's birth that she likened it to a beggar who hangs around a "dunghill" (v. 8, KJV) suddenly being asked to eat with the king. This is how grateful she feels. She went from being "poor" and "needy" to attaining "a seat of honor" (v. 8). Seen from this perspective, praise was only natural. She had attained a position in the community that she could only have dreamt of before.
