—Exodus 16:22-26

It is perfectly biblical and appropriate for every able-bodied person to engage in legitimate and honest work to provide for their family, help the needy, and contribute to the ministry of the Lord. At the same time, we must guard ourselves against materialism, which leads some to become workaholics—working themselves to death in order to acquire more. That is not God’s will. It is His will for us to see our work as part of our calling and our ambassadorial responsibility on earth. Work must be balanced with appropriate rest. We were not made to function around the clock. At opportune intervals, our bodies, minds, and spirits must rest and be refreshed and replenished. One of those intervals is called a weekly Sabbath.
