I stood in the vice-principal’s room answering the question, “What did you do to him?” I didn’t know.
I’d been getting ready for gym class (one of my least favorite classes), when the other kid had decided to knock me over. Unfortunately for him, the shove came at a time when a gym teacher was looking right at us. With the teacher’s quick intervention, one shove was all he got. The other kid told the vice-principal that I had said some unkind things about his parentage and that he had responded to that provocation. It wasn’t true. The vice-principal knew that I did not act in the way the other student was describing. The charge that day did not stick (and it should not have). The challenge for all of us is to make sure that no one could accurately lay a charge against us.
