The topic of speaking in tongues is controversial. Some say that tongues ceased with the original apostles. Others insist that one cannot be filled with the Spirit without speaking in tongues. This is one of those doctrines that needs balance. Neither extreme is correct.
Paul’s view is that speaking in tongues is helpful for personal edification (for private prayer and for personal reflection in a church service where others are speaking in tongues at the same time). Speaking in tongues is also allowed as part of a prophecy, but never by itself or to the distraction of other worshipers.
