Wanting to be an overseer (in the case of Seventh Day Baptists-a pastor or denominational worker) is a noble desire. We need good leadership in our churches and denomination to carry out God's work. Being a leader carries great responsibility. This section of Scripture points to some of those responsibilities. The passage deals not only with job-related requirements-such as "able to teach, not a recent convert, have a good reputation"-but also with personal requirements-"above reproach, self-controlled, not violent, not quarrelsome, not greedy, able to manage his own family well." It is indeed a noble but not easy calling!
