—Exodus 2:11-22
by: J. Gabriel Alegre.
Have you ever had to run away from a problem or a situation which has gone out of control? It is a natural response. We run for fear of retribution or consequences. Did not Adam and Eve hide from God? Why is it that some of us run away rather than ‘face the music’? In Moses’ case, running away was understandable as he rightly feared for his life as Pharaoh sought to kill him (v. 15). Off Moses went to the wilderness, a far cry from the plush existence in the palace courts where he had been numbered as a prince, instead of a murderer.
In the desert, however, the same sense of justice for the oppressed came forth in defending Jethro’s daughters—the same sense of justice that earlier led to an Egyptian man dying under the hand of Moses.
