In the Old Testament, circumcision was a symbol of the covenant between God and his people. In the New Testament, baptism was a similar symbol. It demonstrated the burial of the sinful nature and the resurrection of the new nature.
Neither circumcision nor baptism cause change in a person's life-they are symbols of what has happened in the heart. Baptism means immersion, and it also means identification. The Holy Spirit identifies with us through Jesus Christ, and we become one with him in the symbolism of burial in the water and resurrection as we come out of the water.
