—Mark 16:1-8
by: Jo Anne Kandel.
Even though Jesus had told his followers that he would be raised from the dead (Mark 14:28), the fact that the women came to complete the preparations for burial indicates a lack of confidence that Jesus would indeed be resurrected. Because most Christians have heard the story of Jesus’ overcoming death over and over, we almost take it for granted. But if we meditate on the magnitude and improbability of Jesus’ resurrection, we will understand why the women were surprised that Jesus’ body was gone. How would we feel if we saw a man brutally beaten, killed on a cross, and then his body disappeared?
