—1 Samuel 3:15-4:1a
by: Matthew Berg.
God spoke through Samuel—first to Eli and his family and later to all of Israel. Samuel did not hold back God’s words and God let Samuel be known as His mouthpiece. That God speaks is His basic reality of Biblical faith. The conspicuous feature in all this speaking is that that God speaks to people. Personal address, not philosophical discourse or moral commentary, is God’s primary form of speech. Whenever we let the language of religious abstraction or moral principles crowd out personal address, we betray the Word of God. Listening is a most personal act that develops into answering and following.
