—Psalm 132:11-18
by: Linda Harris.
There are two parts to the promise in verses 11 and 12. First, David would have a descendant on the throne forever. This unconditional promise refers to the heavenly throne of Jesus Christ, David’s descendant through his son Nathan. Second, the promise required obedience—if David’s direct descendants obeyed God, they would reign forever. Some who succeeded David on the throne obeyed God, but many more rebelled.
Notice the parallel between verses 9 and 10 and verses 14 through 18, especially these phrases: resting place; clothed with righteousness (or salvation); shout (or sing) for joy. How do these phrases characterize your life? Has God found a resting place in your heart? Are you clothed with the righteousness of Jesus Christ? Does all of this make you want to shout for joy?
