In scripture, Jesus is called the Good Shepherd. What is a good shepherd? In this passage, Jesus speaks of a shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep-one who really cares. Shepherding, for a good shepherd, is not a job; it is a commitment, a lifestyle. Jesus is our Good Shepherd. He did, indeed, lay down his life for us. When we become part of Jesus' fold, we make a commitment to him. More importantly, he makes a commitment to us. The commitment that Christ makes to us is not conditional. He always loves us, he always cares for us, and he always guides us. As his sheep, we need only to follow his lead and trust that he knows what is best for us. He will never leave or forsake us!
