—2 Chronicles 34:1-7
by: Linda Harris.
Josiah’s father, Amon, flagrantly disobeyed God and was assassinated when Josiah was only eight years old. Despite this tragic beginning to his reign, “neither before nor after Josiah was there a king like him who turned to the Lord as he did—with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength, in accordance with all the Law of Moses” (2 Kings 23:25, NIV). No doubt, the young king’s mentors and mother advised him to seek God and his will. At age twenty, he began to purge the nation of idol worship.
Josiah’s example proves that age alone does not indicate maturity. Young people who learn God’s will can make a difference. If you are young, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12, NIV). If you are not so young, consider how you might encourage a young person to do great things for God.
