—Romans 7:1-6
by: Leanne Lippincott.
These verses prompt a lot of soul searching. I know a young man who, after reading them, concluded that it would be wrong for him to ever remarry, even if his estranged wife divorced him and eventually wedded someone else. As long as she continued to live, he would never take another bride. Happily, this Christian couple reconciled, and their marriage is stronger than ever.
This passage precedes the verses that tell us that Christ’s death released us from the law (v. 6, NIV, NASB). Just as widowed husbands and wives are free to remarry, Christ’s sacrifice gives us the freedom to serve as the Holy Spirit directs.
