The Christian marriage relationship is supposed to be a portrait of that which is depicted by Christ and his church. While Christians interpret some of the specifics differently, I think a general way to look at this is that the husband is to love his wife sacrificially in the same way Christ loved us, unconditionally. He is to be the leader, the initiator. She is to respond in acceptance of this leadership, not like a slave, because in verse twenty-one he is also called to have a submissive attitude. When we see this careful balance, the children are more likely to be obedient and happy.
