—John 1:29-42
by: Gabrielle Watt.
Within the first sentence of this passage, John the Baptist shifted the focus of his listeners to Jesus, then summarized Jesus’ purpose for descending to earth: to be the sacrificial lamb and atonement for sin. John knew who Jesus was, even before he was given a sure sign from God during Jesus’ baptism. In verse 36, John announced Jesus’ presence the same way he did in verse 29. Why did John continue to do this when he saw Jesus? After the second greeting, two of John’s disciples begin to follow Jesus, including Andrew, who later brought his brother, Simon Peter, to follow Jesus. Why would John encourage his own followers to follow Jesus instead?
