—Deuteronomy 24:14-18
by: Michaella Osborn.
Treatment of foreigners is not a popular Bible study topic, but the Bible has a lot to say about it! The words foreigners, strangers, and sojourners are used over 100 times throughout Scripture, two of them appearing in this passage alone. We learn later in Deuteronomy, that God’s purpose for inviting in and showing kindness to foreigners is so that they can listen and learn to fear the Lord and follow God (Deuteronomy 31:10-13). What do we learn about God’s faithfulness from His instructions on how to treat others? Why did He specifically point out foreigners, the fatherless, the poor, the needy, the widow and the hired worker in this passage?
