For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

It is so easy to regret the things in our pasts; our foolishness, our disobedience, and our sin overall can weigh us down tremendously. The good news is that we have a merciful God who cares for us and has saved us from our sinful ways. Our salvation is not based on any act of good we as individuals have done, but instead on the mercy that God possesses. Because of this, we have been born again without the sin that held us down. We no longer need to live in shame or guilt from anything in our past because of God’s mercy.
