Jesus’ washing His disciples’ feet is not just some symbolic thing that he did which He bids us to follow. The servant who washed the feet of guests when they came was the lowliest of servants. When guests arrived would have picked up grime on their feet from the dusty roads. The servant who washed their feet dealt with that matter. Here Jesus did not just do the work of washing feet. He took on the role of that servant by laying aside His garments and girding Himself with a towel. This is the role He wants us as His people to take—the role of servants ministering to those whom God brings across our paths.
