—Psalm 50:1-6
by: John H. Camenga.
Israel was at the pinnacle of its power and prestige when Asaph, composed this psalm. He warned the covenant people against shallow worship rather than warning enemies about the fraud of idolatry. Even before the temple had been built this musician saw the dangers of “going through the motions” in worship. Genuine worship can be formal or informal, quiet or exuberant, traditional or contemporary. It can be spontaneous or follow a set liturgy. Every form can be from the heart. Every form is in danger of becoming routine. What am I doing to worship from the heart?
