So many things in today’s world are written off as mere coincidences. Many are blind to or do not want to see the way God’s hand guides and directs earthly matters. In the previous chapter God promised to guide and protect Jacob. When Jacob has gone approximately the right distance, he stops to speak to some shepherds to find out where he is. Not only has he reached the land of Haran, but these men know his mother’s family and his mother’s niece is on her way to that very well to water her father’s sheep. Could this be a mere coincidence? No. This is an outward demonstration of God’s providence and his intention to keep the covenant he made with Jacob.
