As I undid my seatbelt and stepped out of the car, I knew that I had totaled another car. Two in 18 months was not a record I wanted. As I shivered and waited for someone nice to stop and offer help, I realized that it would not take much to freeze that night. As I sat in the warm truck and waited for the state police to come, I realized that I could have been seriously hurt and wasn't. As I received the ticket that would entitle me to buy a portion of the new guard rail that would be installed on the bridge where the car had hit, the harm I could have caused others became real. On my own, I wreck. I can harm others. By myself, I can face no harm, no natural disaster without fearing what might have been-what might yet be. With God, I can stand in his strength and rest in his peace.
