—Genesis 32:3-12
by: Stephanie Sholtz.
Fear can be such a powerful force. The idea of Esau coming with hundreds of men is sure to have frightened Jacob. Even after 21 years, he would not have forgotten his brother’s murderous intent. Jacob probably wanted to run away. Maybe he wanted to accuse God of not keeping his promises. Instead, for the first time he acknowledges that he is not worthy of mercy. Then he remembers the Lord’s promises and asks God to be faithful in keeping those promises. Jacob takes the great fear in his heart and places it in God’s hands. He trusts God to keep his covenant.
