Verses 13–15 suggest that the parable following them is about greed. The man builds storehouses and gets ready to live an easy life trusting in his wealth. Nothing is mentioned about a single thought he had given to God or help he had given to others out of his abundance. Perhaps this complete focus on self is what is meant by the phrase, “not rich toward God,” (v. 21). There is no point in people keeping wealth for themselves. Wealth is God’s to begin with, and people certainly can’t take it with them when they die.
